In 1905 Kabelvåg was an urban environment: “the capital of Lofoten”, and an important trade centre. The Vågan church, “the Lofoten Cathedral”, was one of Norway’s largest wooden churches. With the motorisation of coastal boats, the harbour was no longer serviceable, and Svolvær took over most of the boat trafic and expanded. In the 2004 picture, we can see that there is little boat trafic in the harbour, just like the transport over the bare rocks, which are now becoming overgrown.
